1234ze is a refrigerant with zero ozone layer depletion and very low global warming potential (GWP), developed to comply with the European F-Gas Directive for the progressive phasing out of refrigerants with high global warming potential across various applications. With a global warming potential of 6, 1234ze is an energy efficient alternative for a wide range of mid-range temperature applications.


1234ze is slightly flammable (A2L), and requires small changes in equipment design to be able to use in new equipment.

· CO2 cascade systems in commercial refrigeration.

The field tests carried out in chillers with air cooled condensation have shown a significant reduction in energy consumption compared with propane (R-290). Additionally, compared to traditional refrigerants, the properties and performance characteristics of 1234ze are similar, but without the environmental penalty of HFCs high in PCA.

If modifications are made to the equipment to compensate for the loss of cooling capacity compared to HFC-134a, 1234ze provides a greater energy efficiency and coefficient of performance (COP) than R.134a over a wide range of applications and conditions. According to experts in compressors, the performance of HFOs can be improved still further by optimizing compressor design. Alternative compressors can be used such as, Scroll, Screw and Centrifugal.
